how to remove a stripped differential drain plug

Mar 26, 2010 #1. Today’s vehicles are usually built with aluminum oil pans. I had a stripped hex plug on a 5L30E BWM transmission before, and the torx socket got it out for me. Well my machine has 110 hours on the clock so I decided to drain the rear diff oil the last time it was done was by the dealer at the 10 hr service . That's the only input I have though, sorry. take your drain plug and head on down to your NAPA/orielly/autozone etc.. parts store and pick up an over sized drain plug. Use a 8mm hex on an impact or breaker bar to get it if it isn't stripped yet. Used a torch on it, and it came out real easy. I've had to do this a number of times on other problems just like yours. I tried PB Blaster but there is just nothing left for the hex bit to grip and because it is recessed you can't get channel locks or vise grips on it. Held the chisel with some vice grips to avoid pounding my hand and waled away. just a lil tip will not apply to your case but for future reference, wire brush is your friend use it along with some penetraing oil, if you could of fit an impact gun in there it might help but i would put penetrading oil and let it sit for atleast a day, i have a 3/4' x 4ft galvanized pipe that i use with a 1/2'' ratchet for that stuff, the torch should work well too maybe for like 30 -45 seconds should be good enough, i am talking the lil propane torch. The trick here is to first go at a direct angle and then start to angle the hammer so you will back off the plug. its the easiest and quickest way. Damn thing was on so freaking tight.
